Summer sunshine

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another week of loose watercolours! How’s your week been? Have you enjoyed the sun? Did you have a nice time? Did you get any painting done this week? Whatever you got up to, it’s a fresh start, so it’s time to rest and reset. A certain special someone has really been enjoying the sunshine recently, and could be found doing a spot of sunbathing in the garden this week. That’s a level of relaxed I think we all aspire to reach.

In terms of painting though, it was lovely to see so many of you at the last live broadcast, ‘Poppy Time.’ A lovely little floral, I’ve been incredibly impressed by all of your versions! You’ve managed to capture the vivid colours of the poppy with a dramatic flair – you should all be very proud of yourselves.

If you’d like another tutorial to paint along to, hop on over to Patreon where you can watch ‘Tin Cup Lilac.’ There’s also two linked tutorials with this one, especially looking at the flowers and the leaves and how to create them. You can find them all by following the link here: https://www.patreon.com/andrewgeesonloosewatercolours

And here’s the finished flowers…

…and the leaves.

In terms of my own painting this week, I’ve been enjoying the sunshine up in Staithes, North Yorkshire on a painting holiday for three days. It was very interesting – I don’t find myself in that part of England very often, and I got to explore all around for interesting subjects to paint. And of course, I love to practice plein air, so it was great fun!

The man in the bottom painting was actually the last lobster pot maker in the village! Did you know that was a job? I certainly didn’t. He was very interesting to chat to, and I learnt all about his job and how he ended up doing it.

If you fancy going away on a painting holiday yourselves this September, why not consider a trip to the beautiful Wells and Somerset with Alpha Holidays? I’ll be running a workshop, so you can join me for an unforgettable four days of watercolour painting in the heart of the city. It includes full hotel accommodation and meals, and it’ll be a fantastic few days of fun. If you’d like to find out more, you can take a gander at the Alpha Painting Holidays website here: https://alphapaintingholidays.com/AlphaPaintingHolidays_Tutors_AndrewGeeson.html

You can also get in touch with them by sending an email: joinus@alphapaintingholidays.com

This week, I thought we’d continue to have a look at the basics of drawing and painting in the loose style. Sometimes it’s really useful to take a step back and go back to basics, no matter how experienced you are, and it can work wonders for your painting! So watch the tutorial below through a few times to get the gist of what its saying, then give it a go yourselves.

That’s all from me this week, as I’m off to join Toby outside whilst we’ve still got some beautiful weather. As always, there’s an exclusive tutorial available at the end of this post especially for all of you paid subscribers – after all, it’s your help that keeps this Substack running. This week, we’re continuing the floral theme by painting ‘Bluebell Days,’ inspired by a wonderful walk in the woods earlier this week, where the flowers were out in full force. I can’t wait to see how you do!

Toby and I will be back in your inboxes very soon, but until next time, have a lovely week, and happy painting!
