Hello everyone, and welcome to another edition of Loose Watercolours. How was your week? Nice and relaxing, I hope. Mine was pretty relaxed this week – Toby and I just enjoyed the sunshine now that the days are getting warmer and the nights are getting lighter. Plus, we had some colour fun – well, Toby did quite literally, as he accidently got covered in paint when he managed to get into my art cupboard. I can confirm that both the dog and my paints are okay, but it was certainly a whole saga!
If you joined us for last week’s live broadcast, you’ll recognise the ‘Blue Cup Tulips’ painting just below. This was a fun one to paint, especially as we limited ourselves to just using a few colours, so we really had to consider how we placed the paint on the page. Overall, I think it ended up looking quite nice, and I loved seeing all of your efforts on the Loose Watercolour Beginners Group!
If you want to join in with the Live Broadcast this week, it’s on at the usual time of 8pm GMT, and this week’s topic is ‘Spring Table.’ You can find it by following the link here. And on that same note, if you’d like to join in with the Loose Watercolour Beginners Group on Facebook, you can find it by following the link here.
There’s also a new tutorial available this week on loosewatercolours.com, ‘Vintage Pansy Cup.’ This is a nice little picture that’s perfect for any seasonal cards you want to make – after all, Easter is only just around the corner. And who doesn’t want a sweet picture of some pansies around Eastertime? So give it a go and practice your delicate brushstrokes.
If that wasn’t enough painting practice, there’s also another tutorial available on my Patreon this week – ‘Sepia Bloom.’ This painting is a Wash & Line as opposed to a Line & Wash, so it’s a slightly different technique than what you might be used to, but you’ll pick it up in no time. Besides, who doesn’t love a slight challenge? We’re only using three colours here, so a slightly limited palette, but it’s all the more satisfying for the final result! You can watch the tutorial here.
In other news this week, I recently rediscovered this picture from the time when I met Eddie the Eagle at one of my caricaturing gigs! That really was a day to remember. If you’re not familiar with who he is, he was the first person to represent the UK in Olympic ski jumping in 1988 – it was a big story back in the day. He’s a very nice man, it turns out.
That’s all from me this week, folks, as I’m going for a run this afternoon – I’m making the most of this weather. Can you believe it’s March already? It seems like New Year’s was only yesterday.
As always, there’s an additional tutorial at the end of this post for all of you that are paid subscribers to this Substack – after all, it’s your support that helps keep this page running. This week’s video is a lovely little meadow scene – inspired, in part, by all of the beautiful flowers that are blooming now that it’s spring. I hope you all enjoy painting along!
Until next time, though, it’s goodbye from Toby and I, and in the meantime, happy painting!
