Floral fancies

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another week of loose watercolours! How’s your week been? Good, I hope. Now I’ve spotted something lovely on all of my walks around the village this week, and maybe you might have as well! That’s right, flowers! In bloom! Obviously I got very inspired with all the flora and fauna everywhere, so this week’s turned into a bit of a springtime special.

There wasn’t a live broadcast last week – again, sorry about that everyone – but I was away in Bristol for the start of the week. I was teaching art down there, and it would have been a bit of a tight turnaround to make it back in time for the usual broadcast. Don’t worry, though, we’re back on as normal from now on, and there’s lots of new tutorials available for you to enjoy in the meantime.

There’s a new tutorial on loosewatercolours.com this week, the lovely little ‘Sunlight & Bluebells.’ I had a lot of fun with this one – especially with how the light flows through the trees – and there’s some lovely bluebell sprouting spots near us, so it’s a sure-fire way to know that spring is on the way! If you’d like to give it a go, visit: loosewatercolours.com

There’s also a little ‘March Hare’ waiting for you over on my Patreon page, with an intermediates tutorial to match! He’s a very friendly little fellow, so hop on over there now to give it a go: https://www.patreon.com/andrewgeesonloosewatercolours

In terms of my own painting this week, I got inspired by all of the flowers in bloom, so I created this delicate little potted snow drop painting. Keep your eyes peeled! There’s a new tutorial based on this heading your way very soon. After all, I thought it was so nice, I wanted to paint it twice!

And after all that talk of flower tutorials this week, why not give it a go yourselves? Here’s a free tutorial for you all to try! I hope you all have as much fun with ‘Simple Pink Flowers’ as I did, and I can’t wait to see how you all get on.

If you want to be reminded whenever there’s a new tutorial available, or just want a warm and supportive place to post your fantastic loose masterpieces, why not join the Loose Watercolour Beginners Facebook Group? Watercolour Basics #11: Mini Paint Splatters (featuring Miss Rigger)

This week, I thought we’d carry on our series looking at essential watercolour basics by talking about the main lady of the moment. That’s right, it’s only Miss Rigger herself, and she’s here to talk you through her signature paint splatter moves. As always, watch the video through a couple of times to really get the gist of the technique, then give it a go yourselves, and watch your paintings spring to life!

It’s spring season here at Loose HQ, so that can mean only one thing – we’ve gone daffodil-mad! I can’t seem to stop painting daffodils – maybe it’s their bright petals, or just the fact that they can be seen everywhere this time of year, I can’t seem to get them off of the page. So I have to ask, which one of the pictures below do you prefer? I’m always curious.

Option 1.

And option 2.

Right, that’s all from me this week, as I’ve got to rush off and get to the shop before it closes. We’re out of milk, which is the most essential ingredient for my most favourite drink in the world – a nice hot cuppa!

As always, though, there’s an exclusive tutorial featured at the end of this post for all of you paid subscribers – your support on this Substack is invaluable, and it’s incredibly generous of you all – so what better way to say thank you than another tutorial? I hope you enjoy this one – I think ‘Daffodil Selfie’ is a very fun paint!

Until next time, though, it’s goodbye from Toby and I, and I’ll be back in your inboxes very soon. In the meantime, though, have a great week, and happy painting!

‘Daffodil Selfie.’
