Dawn Breaking

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another edition of the Loose Watercolours Substack with me, your host! Hopefully you’ve all had a restful and relaxing week these past seven pays, and if you’re anything like Toby and I, you’ll have enjoyed seeing all the flowers in bloom. Talk about getting some artistic inspiration!

This week’s live broadcast was ‘Dawn Breaking,’ where we worked on the speed of our painting, and more specifically, when to drop colours in at the right time. It was great to see so many faces, old and new, and I hope you all enjoyed painting along! If you’d like to join in the fun this week, the live broadcast is on tonight at the usual time of 8pm GMT, and you can watch it by clicking the link here: https://loosewatercolours.com/live-broadcast/

‘Dawn Breaking.’ Have you spotted any birds singing in the trees lately?

If you fancy a bit more painting practice, there’s a new wash and line tutorial now available on Patreon, ‘Say it with Flowers.’ After all, why say something with words, when you can say it with flowers (or maybe a nice painting)?

‘Say it with Flowers.’

Here’s a painting that I got up to recently – a peony while I was staying overnight on the coast. I was inspired by the beautiful floral blooms that were out in style, and I think it turned out alright if you ask me.

Some peony practice.

An oldie but a goodie, this week. I found this picture of me at an art demo a while back, where two of the ladies won my painting of the evening. Have you ever been to an art demonstration? They’re a lot of fun – I usually get commissioned by local art groups to go and paint, and everyone’s always very enthusiastic about loose watercolours. If you’ve never been to one before, why not check out your local art groups and see if they’ve got any events on?

On that note, I also want to say a huge thank you to all of you who have joined the Beginners Watercolour Group on Facebook. I was amazed by the incredibly enthusiastic response, and we’ve now got more than two thousand members, which is absolutely fantastic! Still interested in joining? There’s a little treat for everyone this week – a tutorial for you to enjoy! Usually reserved for paid subscribers (don’t worry, you’ll find another tutorial in your inboxes later this week as a thank you for all of your support), this week’s tutorial is available to everyone to paint along and have some fun with. And what better subject than florals, seeing as spring is fully in bloom?

Let me know how you all get on, and I’d love to see your versions of ‘Simple Flower’!

If you enjoyed that, why not consider subscribing to this Substack to get more weekly news from Loose Watercolours?

That’s all from me and Toby this week, as I’m off on my holidays soon, and I’ve got to go and pack before I rush off to the airport. Can you guess where I’m off to? I’ll give you a clue – it’s somewhere hot – hotter than England, anyway. That, and this country is known for its delicious food, so I’m looking forward to a sweet treat or two.

In the meantime, though, we hope you all have a lovely week, and happy painting!
