Brushes and blossoms

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another week of loose watercolours! It’s February now, if you can believe it. It feels like I’ve barely had time to blink since the new year, as it’s gone by so fast! There’s something in there about taking a step back and smelling the roses. Or painting them, in our case!

It was great to see so many of you joining in with last week’s live broadcast, ‘View from a Fence.’ I hope you all enjoyed painting the little silhouette of the cat perched on the fence as much as I did! Tonight’s broadcast will be just as much fun, as the subject is ‘Blossom Walk.’ I’ve certainly seen some flashes of pink round and about when I’ve been walking Toby the dog, which can only mean one thing – spring’s round the corner! So what better way to celebrate than to paint some delicate blossoms! It’s on at the usual time of 8pm GMT, and here’s the link if you’d like to join in: https://loosewatercolours.com/live-broadcast/

If that wasn’t enough springtime subjects for you, then you’re in luck, as there’s another tutorial availible on Patreon. ‘Cherry Blossom Doves’ features some lovely little doves perched on florals – it’s not quite seeing the cherry blossoms in Japan, but it’s the next best thing. For those of you that are Patreon members, you didn’t just get one, but two live broadcasts this week, so I hope you enjoyed them both! ‘Evening Fall’ was an atmospheric winter scene with some lovely colours bleeding in with the sunset – I don’t know about you all, but it makes me feel like I’m bundled up outside watching the sun go down with a warm thermos in hand.

Watercolour Basics #10: The Light Effect

This week, we’re continuing our look at all sorts of tips and techniques useful to watercolour beginners, and this week, I thought we’d take a closer look at light. It’s something we use in every single painting, even if it’s not immediately obvious, so what better thing to practice to get your paintings in tip-top shape? You know the drill. Watch the tutorial a couple of times through until you think you’ve picked up the key techniques, then bring them into your own paintings and they’ll be popping off the page in no time!

If you’d like to be notified as to when new tutorials are posted and you haven’t yet joined the Loose Watercolour Beginners Facebook group, what are you waiting for? It’s an incredibly welcoming group with over seven thousand members, so you’ll see lots of lovely artwork posted every day, and you’ll never miss a live broadcast again! That’s all from Toby and I this week, as I’ve got to start getting ready for tonight’s live broadcast. Remember, it’s on at 8pm GMT if you’d like to join in!

With it being February now, there’s a sea of hearts on the horizon – every single card shop for miles around is bursting with balloons, flowers, hearts and all sorts of things red. So what better way to celebrate than by painting something personal for that special someone? And now you can with the exclusive ‘Rose Day’ tutorial featured at the end of this post, as a special thank you to all of you paid subscribers. I’ve said this countless times before, but it’s your support that helps keep this Substack running. So I hope you enjoy painting along, and I can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Until next time, though, it’s goodbye from Toby and I! Have a lovely week, and happy painting!
