April Showers

Hello everyone, and welcome back to another week of loose watercolours! How’ve you all been? Did you have some fun painting this week? Toby and I have been moping about this week as it’s been wet weather all around – they certainly weren’t kidding when they said it would be ‘April Showers!’ It’s not all doom and gloom though, as summer is right around the corner – whoa! Hasn’t that gone fast? So we’re looking forward to some warmer weather and sunshine all around – and it won’t be long now!

It was lovely to see so many of you at the live broadcast last week, and I hope you all enjoyed painting along to ‘Morning Has Broken!’ Though were we painting a sunrise or sunset – you decide! If you want to join in the fun this week, the live broadcast is on at the usual time of 8pm GMT, and this week’s subject is ‘Bees in Lavender Trees’ – a nice floral for us to practice.

You can watch it by following the link here: https://loosewatercolours.com/live-broadcast/

‘Morning has Broken,’ indeed.

For those of you that have joined my Patreon, you may have noticed that there’s a new tutorial available for you all to enjoy – ‘Blossom Springtime.’ With some bright, vivid pinks, it’s a great way to practice getting loose with your colour choices, whilst having some fun along the way! I’ve been toying with some new techniques this week, which I tested out in this painting, ‘Old Glasshouse.’ It’s not a tutorial yet, just an image on loosewatercolours.com, but if you’re feeling especially brave, why not give it a go trying to replicate it based on your loose watercolour skills? The most exciting part is painting all of the garden plants red!

If you’d like to be notified as soon as new tutorials are posted, why not join in the fun over at the Beginners Watercolour Group on Facebook? There’s links posted to all of the new videos, as well as handy tips and tricks as to how you can improve your painting skills. And did I mention that it’s an incredibly friendly group of over three thousand beginner watercolour artists, so it’s a lovely and supportive community in which you can hone your skills? In dog updates this week, Toby’s been supervising some carpentry in the kitchen these past few days, and Kev the Carpenter brought him a tasty treat as a reward! The carrot was almost bigger than he was!

A tasty treat for Toby!

The loose gang have also been on their travels recently, and they sometimes like to stop for a quick rest in amongst all their painting. Sometimes I’m even lucky enough to snap a picture of them enjoying some well earned time off! Here they are in Italy enjoying a spot of light lunch.

A spot of ‘light’ lunch.

That’s all from me this week, though, as I’ve just caught a whiff of something delicious coming from downstairs. I reckon there’s a cake just freshly out of the oven, and I intend to find out!

As usual, there’s an extra treat for all of you that support this Substack as an enormous thank you for helping to keep this blog running. This week’s exclusive tutorial for all of you paid subscribers is ‘3 Floral Buddies,’ and I hope you all enjoy painting along as much as I enjoyed making it!

Until next time though, it’s goodbye from Toby and I – so in the meantime, have a lovely week, and happy painting!
