“I love to paint in a loose impressionistic style and I’d love to show you how to do the same. I used to be so tight, but now I’m so loose!”
I always wanted to paint and draw. A vivid imagination and pencil were a good start.
My artistic journey began as a very detailed botanical artist and children’s book illustrator, even working with Enid Blyton’s daughter on her mother’s famous creation Noddy. Although very busy and successful as a professional artist I didn’t feel fulfilled.
I worked long hours under strict deadlines, drawing and painting botanical pieces to exact specifications. I no longer enjoyed sitting down to paint, worrying more about the outcome and if I’d be able to create the piece I needed in the short time I had. I ended up feeling stuck, unhappy and frustrated with the corner I’d painted myself into (if you’ll pardon the pun).
Then one day, I asked myself, ‘How would I really love to paint?’ The answer was in a loose, impressionistic, free style of watercolours. I wanted to focus on having fun first with my painting and to see where it would take me.
This began my journey from being a very tight detailed artist to discovering the Loose Water Colour Style. Through, trial and error and many U-turns. I developed a process that finally allowed me to consistently capture the essence of truly painting loose.
Instead of hours in the studio, I could create vibrant works of art that were fun to paint, and didn’t take huge amounts of time. The process was the opposite of how I was painting before. Instead of trying to get everything perfect, the style seemed to develop on the page by itself, as if by magic.
I am still a full time professional artist travelling and painting all over Europe. Every day I paint and absolutely love it along with teaching others amongst the fun, spills and splashes to also paint loose.
Embrace the joy of loose watercolour painting!
Having trawled through many online watercolour tutorials for months, most of which were very dull indeed, I discovered Andrew Geeson. His fun approach and endless encouragement have kept me going on my journey. The website is great - packed full of information and ideas, tips and techniques, fun weekly challenges and tutorials. He is a great teacher, with a knack for simplifying what others make very complicated, to making it achievable. Subscribing to Andrew's website has been worth every penny. I would recommend Andrew and his website to any aspiring loose watercolourist.
As a newcomer to watercolour, I had not found a style of painting which captivated my imagination. That is until I found, Andrew Geeson’s website. Andrew’s website offers comprehensive tutorials at varying levels of ability plus many fun and exciting ways to learn. He is an exceptional tutor. His weekly live tutorials encouraged me to ‘have a go’ and fellow ‘looses’ have made me feel very welcome and increasingly confident in my own ability and I really appreciate the opportunity to post my paintings on the website.
Art is a fairly new endeavour for me. I was the kid who was told by 'everyone' that I couldn't draw, so I've spent my whole life (50+ years) believing that, even though my heart yearned to create. Now, while raising my 5-year-old boy/girl twin grandchildren and nurturing my granddaughter's artistic talents, I slowly began to try it myself. I am loving it and have discovered that art is a skill, not necessarily an innate talent! Hurray!
